land use conflicts Flashcards
discuss the conflicts caused by the various land used
-UN THE CAIRNGORMS NATIONAL PARK tourists are buying second homes
this pushes up prices for locals
for example, 20% of homes in ballater are holiday rentals
-this also reduces demand for services like planks and gps
this means that they may close leaving locals wo access
-in the cairngorms tourists may wild camp irresponsibly leaving litter behind
this causes harm to wildlife if it’s eaten
-tourists may also have bonfires
this can lead to causing wildfires, destroying valuable habitats
-tourists may not always keep dogs on leads, which can scare pregnant ewes into misscarying
-tourists may park on verges
this causes erosion and visual pollution, for example, on the road to loch muick
-tourists may park infront of farmers gates
this makes it hard for them to tend to their livestock or crops
-tourists may wonder off footpaths, which widens them
-tourists have conflict with conservationists, skiing damaged vegetation, example is glenshee
-tourists can cause traffic congestion, unfimiliar with the windey narrow roads and drive slowly, delta locals getting to work
referring to the CAIRNGORMS NATIONAL PARK
a) describe strategies used to manage land use conflicts
and
b)comment on the effectiveness of these strategies
in the cairngorms, litter bins are removed in remote areas A✅
for example, car park at luch muick E✅
this encourages people to take their litter home with them rather than leave it next to an overflowing bin A✅
however this can be ineffective as people can be lazy, choosing to dump their rubbish if a bin is not available B✅
At loch Muick a large carpark has been built for walkers A✅
to reduce the visual population of the carpark trees have been planted around it A✅
this is n effective permanent solution that also provides a habitat for wildlife B✅
the road to loch muick can be closed when the carpark gets too full to prevent people parking on verges A✅
the carpark is effective as the £5 charge is used to maintain footpaths on the balmoral estate B✅ however footpath maintenance is expensive s a metre of path can cost over £100 to improve B✅
at loch kinord there’s no water access for water sports from march to august A✅, this prevents chicks being seperated from their parents and allows the loch to thrive A✅
