Land Use Flashcards
Hunting and gathering
The way of life for Eskimos in the Arctic and bushmen in southern Africa’s desert. Hunters and gatherers are declining in number
Forestry
Standard practice in regions of the temperate zones but not in the tropics where slow greeting hardwood forestry is rapidly being destroyed
Shifting cultivation
Ancient agriculture practice. Tropical trees are planted and hacked down, allowed to dry and then burned to the grown creating farmland.
Subsistence agriculture
Meeting the needs of farmers who use extensive human labor and very simple equipment to raise crops and cattle.
Plantations
Lard tropical land holdings that specialize in growing and partially processing a single cash crop. With the use of slave labor early plantations made fortunes
Rice paddles
Fields of hillside terraces of south east Asia are flooded by monsoon rains and irrigation networks for growing the regions staple food. Practiced where land is scarce and maximum productivity is needed.
Mixed crop and animal
Relies on a wide variety for both human and animal consumption. North America and Europeans use their land intensively and Asian Latin American farmers work their land extensively.
Mediterranean
Drought tolerant vines and trees that survive long dry summers. And grain crops that last mild wet winters. Livestock is raised and with the use of irrigation citrus trees are grown
Specialized farming
High key intensive method used mostly in temperate regions that produce large amounts of fruit and vegetables for adjacent urban areas
Dairying
Liquid milk is converted to processed milk, butter or cheese for distribution.
Livestock ranching
Relies on plentiful land so that herds are able to find enough food even where grass is sparse.
Commercial grain production
Merchandised form of food production. Giant farms owned by corporations whose employees are generally present during planting and harvesting seasons
Nomadic herding
Practiced in the deserts and semi deserts of Africa and Asia. Tribes are moving looking for new source of glass
