What is a map?
It is a graphical representation of a portion of the earths surface drawn to scale, as seen from above
What is cartography?
It is the art and science of expressing the known physical features of the earth graphically by maps and charts
What does a map provide?
It provides information on the existence of the location and the distance between ground features, such as populated places and routes of travel,communication, variations in terrain, heights of natural features, and the extent of vegetation cover
On a tactical mission in small units, who should know where the map is?
All members of the unit
What are the categories of NGA maps in terms of size?
Small Scale
Medium Scale
Large Scale
What is the scale on a small map and what is it used for?
1:1,000,000 and smaller maps are used for general planning and for strategic studies. It covers a large area at the expense of detail
What is the scale on a medium map and what is it used for?
Between 1:1,000,000 and 1:75,000 are used for operational planning. They contain moderate amount of detail.
What is the scale on a large map and what is it used for?
1:75,000 and larger are used for tactical, administrative, and logistical planning. These are the maps that a Paratrooper is likely to encounter
What are the different colors on a map?
Black Red-Brown Blue Green Brown Red Other
What does the color black indicate on a map?
Cultural(man-made) features such as buildings and roads, surveyed spot elevations, and all labels
What does the color red-brown indicate on a map?
Cultural features, all relief features, non-surveyed spot elevations, and elevation such as contour lines on red light readable maps
What does the color blue indicate on a map?
Hydrography or water features such as lakes, swamps, rivers, and drainage
What does the color green indicate on a map?
Vegetation with military significance such as woods, orchards, and vineyards
What does the color brown indicate on a map?
All relief features and elevation such as contours on older edition maps, and cultivated land on red-light readable maps.
