LAN, WAN AND MAN Flashcards
LAN
local area network
what is a LAN?
LAN is a group of computers and network devices connected together usually within the same building.
where is a LAN based?
most LANs whether wired or wireless are based on ethernet
How are computers connected in a LAN?
computers and servers can connect to each other via cables or wirelessly in the same LAN. servers in a LAN are mostly connected by a wire as it is the fastest medium for network communication but for workstations such as desktops wireless is more suitable as it can create a problem adding more wires to an existing system
advanatages compared to WAN and MAN
data transfer speeds are higher
WAN
wide area network
what is a WAN?
wan is a computer network that covers larger geographical areas such as countries.
when will a WAN be used?
wan provides a solution for businesses operating from distant geographical locations who want to communicate with each other for sharing and managing data or for general communication.
what is WAN made up off?
wan is made up of two or more LANS or MANS that are interconnected with each other which means users and computers in one location can communicate with users and computers in another.
how are computers connected in WAN?
computers are connected through public networks such as fibre optic cables and satellite links. WANs are mostly private and are connected by ISP’s (internet service provider) which connects the LAN of the organisation to the internet
what is the biggest WAN?
the internet
MAN
metropolitan area network
when will a MAN be used?
MAN is a network that connects two or more computers, communicating devices or networks in a single network that is geographically larger than a LAN but smaller than a WAN.
where are MAN.s built for?
MAN’s are mostly built for cities or towns to provide high data connection and is usually owned by a single organisation. a MAN bridges a number of LANs with fibre optical links which acts as a backbone.
