Lady Macbeth ambition Flashcards

Q

“A little water clears us of this deed”

A

Her overpowering ambition abstracts her from seeing genuine the stress of a husband. She uses litotes (under exaggeration) to downplay the murder. It is laced with irony as lady Macbeth shifts to a melodramatic state of insanity and begins speaking in hyperbole as guilt takes over. The euphemism hint at this, by referring to the murder as a “deed” Lady Macbeth fails to face up to the reality of it, she must placate it into a less heinous words in order to keep her composure
