Lady Macbeth Flashcards
1
Q
LM connection to witches
A
- She calls upon the spirits to “unsex me here” and for her “milk” creates life to be replaced with “gall” something acidic and destructivr
2
Q
LM masculinity
A
- she wanted the spirits to “make thick my blood” linking into Jacobean ideas that men had thicker blood than women, -she needs the supernatural to empower herself and not
suffer from the “compunctious visitings of nature” (i.e. her conscience, highly
ironic considering later in the play). As a result, it makes her a dangerous and seen as a villain from a Jacobean audience.
3
Q
Consequences of her supernatural wishes
A
- she has not been able to deny her conscience, and she is now suffering from a “great perturbation
in nature” where she cannot remove the “damned spot” or the “smell” of Duncan’s
blood from her. - This ultimately reveals that she is, like Macbeth, human. Despite
her attempts to become something else, she cannot remove her humanity and her perceived weakness.
