Lady Jane Grey Affair Flashcards
Reason for the affair was Religious:
Edward was a strong protest and concerned about Mary, a catholic, taking the throne.
Northumberland also knew his protestant beliefs would cause him to lose power under Mary. Those who gained land from the Dissolution (1536-41) may also have supported him as they thought they could lose their land under Catholicism
Reasons for the affair being Political:
When Northumberland’s son married Lady Jane Grey in 1553 it was believed Edward was in good health and would live a long time, thus Northumberland had little to politically gain from it.
Threat to Mary
Northumberland initially had support form the Privy Council, but proclamations sent by Mary to them after Edward’s death, declaring herself as queen changed this.
Northumberland was forced to leave London to confront MAry, and at this point, the PC changed their view and gave Mary support. Northumberland’s force deserted him and he was forced to proclaim mary Queen
Aftermath
3
Sudden collapse shows the plot stood no chance, reinforced as Mary was greeted happily as she entered London.
Some may have feared the instability of having an illegitimate ruler
Leniency shown to others by Mary may show her position as weak. She appointed Paget to the Privy Council and released Gardiner form jail, suggesting she was in need of extra support
