Ladders Flashcards
LADDERS
What are the 4 types of aerial ladders?
- Aerial ladders - 100 ft or longer
- telescopic booms - 65 - 85 feet are prepiped with a fog nozzle
- Articulating boom - 50 - 100 feet are two or more arms attached at swivel joint
- aerial towers and platforms - 50 - 100 feet have basket or platform at the end
LADDERS
What is the general rule of thumb for nozzle flows on aerial apparatus?
Between 1900 L/min and 3800 L/min
LADDERS
What are the 5 things a “quint” has?
- hose bed
- pump
- water tank
- hydraulically operated ladder
- ground ladders (minimum 198 feet of ground ladders)
LADDERS
What are the tree main components of an aerial device?
- turntable
- elevating boom
- operating platform
LADDERS
What is on the bottom of a turntable?
Machined ball races in a large diameter heavy steel ring bolted to the chasis. In these races are hardened steel balls that support all down loading of the ladder and permit free rotation
LADDERS
What do elevating cylinders consist of?
seamless outer shell containing a packed and tightly fitted piston, which is attached to a piston rod.
LADDERS
What do trunnions do?
They are attached to piston rods and tie the two cylinders together forcing them to move in unison
LADDERS
How many control lever are on the control pedestal?
3 - hoisting/lowering, extend/retract, rotation
LADDERS
what are some other items that be on the control pedestal?(5)
- engine starter
- throttle control
- gauges
- incline meter
- safe to load chart
LADDERS
what does the ladder hold down hook do?
Prevents the ladder from bouncing around when the apparatus is moving
LADDERS
What stops the hydraulic fluid from moving once the ladder is in the desired position
Hoist lock valve
LADDERS
what should be considered when positioning an aerial? (5)
- Stability of the serial itself
- overhead wires
- steep grades
- parked cars
- other apparatus
