Are mammary glands present in females only?
No both sexes have mammary glands but females possess the biological role to produce milk.
What are the two other names for the tail of Spence?
Ancillary tail or Radix Mammae
What is the body of the breast called?
Corpus manmae

What kind of sweat glands are composed in the mammary glands?
Sudoriferous glands (apocrine type)
What type of epithelial tissue is present in the mammary gland?
Glandular
What connective tissue is composed in the mammary gland?
Fat, fibrous tissues, blood, lymph and nerves
Where does the nerve supply to the mammary gland come from?
Branches of the 4th, 5th and 6th intercostal
What shape are lactocytes?
Cubodial
Are the junctions between the lactocytes right?
Initially no they are not tight but they are tight a few days after which is important when considering medications.
What is the smooth muscle action in the mammary gland?
To contract and expel secretions in the lumen.
When does lactogenesis 1 begin?
In pregnancy between 16-20 weeks
What type of milk is present in L1?
Colostrum
What occurs during L1?
Gland becomes sufficiently differentiated to secrete small quantities of colostrum, breasts grow due to the increase of oestrogens and progestrone
What is Lactogenesis 2
Initiation of milk supply “milk coming in” typically 70 hours post birth.
