LACRIMAL GLAND Flashcards
Where is lacrimal gland found?
Found in the fossa on the temporal side of the frontal bone
What are the portion of the lacrimal gland?
Palpebral and orbital portions are found
Why is the lacrimal gland divided into portions? due to what structure?
Tendon of superior levator palpebrae muscle
What are the parts of the larcimal apparatus consists of?
Lacrimal gland Accessory lacrimal gland Lacrimal puncta Lacrimal canaliculi Lacrimal sac Nasolacrimal duct
Acessory lacrimal gland located in?
Subconj tissue from the fornix up to the tarsal plate
Nasolacrimal drainage system consists of?
Lacrimal puncta
Canaliculi
Lacrimal sac
Nasolacrimal duct
Where is lacrimal puncta found?
Found in a tissue that uplifed in the lacrimal papilla
There is a puncta in each upper and lower lid
Drains into a tube called canaliculus
What is the 10mm long tube that connects each puncta to the lacrimal sac?
Canaliculi
How long is the canaliculi and what does it connects?
it is 10mm long and connects each puncta to the lacrimal sac
The canaliculi vertically how long?
The canaliclui medially how long?
2 mm
8 mm
Why is it important to have angle of the canaliculi?
because it will prevent having back flow
Which muscle contracts the canaliculi during eyelid closure to assist in tear drainage?
The muscle of Horner
What is the function of the muscle of Horner?
it contracts the canaliculi during eyelid closure and helps for the tear drainage
Lacrimal sac where is it found?
Found within a fossa in the medial orbital wall
Formed by joining of the maxillary and lacrimal bones
Orbital septum behind the sac
What divides the lacrimal sac?
the medial palpebral ligament, from the tarsal plate, divides into 2 limbs that attach in front of and behidn the sac
Nasolacrimal duct where is it found?
Lies next to maxillary sinus
How long the nasolacrimal duct?
it is 15 mm long and travels along the nasolacrimal canal
Where is naso-lacrimal duct terminates?
in the inferior meatus of the nasal cavity
Valve of Hasner, where is this found?
Found at the end of the duct
What is the function of the valve of hasner?
it prevents backflow of nasal fluids into the lacrimal drainasage system
Which structure prevents the backflow of the nasal fluids into the lacrimal drainage system?
valve of hasner
What is Dacryo-cystitis
it is an infection of the lacrimal sac
Due to naso-lacrmial duct blockage
What is acute-dacryo-adenitis
result in acute swelling and discomfort in the upper lateral eyelid - which is the region of the lacrimal gland
The blood supply of the lacrimal gland is recieved from?
the lacrimal artery
The vein that drains the lacrimal gland joined by?
ophtlamic vein
The nerve supply for the lacrimal gland is?
lacrimal nerve –> sensory –> trigeminal first division –> the great petrosal nerve –> parasympathetic seretory
Parasympathetic secretory comes from?
superior salivary nucleus and is a branch of the facial nerve
Sympathethic nerves accompanies
the lacrimal artery and the lacrimal nerve
