Pre-op blood work
CBC, BMP, coagulation studies, blood type and screen, pregnancy test, ECG, ABG, and urinalysis
X-ray
A type of radiation that uses electromagnetic waves to create pictures of the inside of the body
MRI
Magnetic Resonance Imaging
Arthroscopy
A surgical procedure that allows a practitioner to view the inside of a joint through an arthroscope. Used to diagnose, repair, and remove loose or foreign materials in the joint. Abnormal findings include abnormal color, shape, the presence of cysts, arthritis, an infection.
Rheumatoid factor
Measures the amount of RF in your bloodstream. RF are proteins made by your immune system that can attack healthy tissue in the body. High levels indicate rheumatoid arthritis.
Erythrocyte sedimentation rate
A blood test that measures how quickly RBCs settle to the bottom of a a tube in an hour. It’s an indicator of inflammation in the body.
Casts
Rigid immobilization devices constructed of fiberglass or plaster for use on weight bearing extremities.
Traction
The use of weights and force to reduce the fracture and relieve muscle spasms.
Open reduction with internal fixation
ORIP; Open reduction requires a surgical incision to visualize the wound and ensure proper alignment. Internal fixation requires the use of plates, screws, rods, and other hardware to realign the fractured bone segments.
External fixation
The application of a series of rods and pins to the area surrounding the fracture, creating an external frame to stabilize and align the displaced fragments.
