  7. I = Infections (helminths, coccidiodes mycosis)

Erythrocytosis

A

HI RBCS

  1. H = Hypoxia/hypoventilation
  2. I = Inappropriate erythropoietin
  3. R = Realtive polycythemia (stress, dehydration)
  4. B = Bone marrow disorder
  5. C = Carboxyhemoglobin, Congenital hemoglobinopathies
  6. S = Steroids, androgens

  2. O = Occult carcinoma
  3. T = TB/infections
  4. A = AIDS

  2. I = Invaded marrow (mets)
  3. D = Dysplastic marrow (B12 def, folate def, AIDS, 1ry myelodyspl)
  4. S = Splenomegaly

Thrombocytopenia

A

PLTS

  1. P = Peripheral destruction (ITP, DIC, TTP, PTP*, prostethic valve, pregnancy, drugs, systemic infections, collagen vascular dz)
  2. L = Lab error (clumping)
  3. T = Trapping (in the spleen)
  4. S = Sythesis problem (marrow failure)

* PTP = post transfusion purpura
