Labs Flashcards
What are the 4 types of mineral soil?
- Gravel
- Sand
- Silt
- Clay
What type of parent material is moved by Gravity
Colluvium (sediments found on steep slopes derived from local sources)
What type of parent material is moved by Wind
Loess ( sediment composed primarily of silt-sized particles) Volcanic tephra ( sediment composed of volcanic materials in a range of particle sizes) Eolian sand ( sediment composed primarily of sand-sixed particles )
What type of parent material is moved by Ice only
Till( sediments deposited directly by glacial ice) .
What type of parent material is moved by Water and Ice
Glacial-fluvial ( sedimentes depsited by glacial metwater in a floodplain enviorment)
Glacial-lacustrine (sediments deposited by glacial meltwater in lake enviroment)
Glacial marine ( sediments deposited by glacial meltwater in an ocean enviroment)
What types of parent material is moved by water?
Alluvial or fluvial (deposited from flowing water)
Lacutine (sendiments in still water, especially lakes)
Marine ( deposited in oceans or re-worked by oceans)
Original rock from which younger rock or soil is formed
Parent Material
Soils composing of loose sediments or surficial materials that have been transported and deposited by gravity, water, ice or wind.
Transported Soils
Soils developed in place (in situ) from the underlying rock. These soils are uncommon in Canada and can typically be found in areas that have not experienced glaciation (e.g. tropics).
Residual Soils
Organic soil deposits that have developed in place from plant residues and have been preserved by a high water table (e.g. peat)
