Labour Flashcards
what sort of sensation does the lightly myelinated Aδ fibres carry?
Rapid, sharp pain and are responsible for initial reflex response
what sort of sensation does the lightly myelinated C fibres carry?
slow, burning pain
What centres contain high concentration of opioid receptors and endogenous opioids?
Periqueductal grey (PAG) in the midbrain and rostal ventromedial medulla (RVM)
Pain and childbirth: 1st stage?
Mainly Visceral, dull aching that is poorly localised?
Pain and childbirth: 2nd stage?
Mostly somatic - stiulation of pudendal nerve. sharp and severe and well localised
Pain and childbirth: 2nd stage?
Mostly somatic - stiulation of pudendal nerve. sharp and severe and well localised
Whats the difference between analgesics and anesthetics?
analgesics: relieves pain without total loss of feeling or muscle movement
Anaesthetics: blocks ALL feelings
Where does opioid analgesics act primarily?
spinal cord and brain to inhibit the neurotransmission of pain
Where does non-opioid analgesics act primarily?
peripheral tissues to inhibit the formation of algogenics such as prostaglandins
What does paracetamol inhibit?
inhibit TRPA1-ion channels in the CNS (surface of nerve cells).
What is target for anaesthetics? And what is the patient at risk of?
The GABAAreceptor (ligand gated ion channel).
risk of severe hypoxia and death from asphyxiation
