Laboratory Techniques Flashcards
Name glass ware from least to most accurate
beaker,erlynmeiger flask,graduated cylender,burette,volumetric flask,volumetric pipet
One of the many uses of a lab coat is protection against
alpha radiation caused by alpha particles that resemble a helium nucleus as they are composed of two protons and two neutrons, they are the largest radioactive particles and have the lowest penetrance and can be repelled by a lab coat.
Burets
are prices of laboratory equipment that are primarily used in tritylations to deliver specific precise amounts of liquid titrant. A burette contains a stopcock along its side. It is graduated in 1.0 mL incremements so the liquid volume measurmeents always read 2 decimals places to all burets to be versitile at reading decimal volumes.
Beaker
used to transfer liquids, the mixture of liquid, or for reactions. They are NOT accurate and should not be used for measurement
Volumetric Pipet
is recognized to be the best tool for measurement and transfer but it only holds set amounts of volume. So a 25mL volumetric flask can only the best to measure 25mL as volume not a number so specific as 11.57mL
Erlenmeyer flask
use to trasfer liuwids, a mixture of liquids or for reacctions. They are NOT accuret
Graduated cylinder
they are used for transfer of liquids, mixtures of liquid, or reactions NOT accurent
Spectorphotometer
measures the concentration of a solution. Light is shown through a solution some of the lights is abs by the solution and the spectrophotomeeter measures the amout of lights abs by measureing the amought of abs of light the concentration can be determined
Distillation
separating two unknown substances
Polarimetry
identifitying chirality and the enantiomer
Melting point Apparatus
determines the melting point of a solid compound
Allotrope
structural forms of the same element
mixture
containes 2 or more pure substances
group 2 elements
alkaline earth metals
sublimation
transition from solid to gas without passing through an intermediate phase. Occurs at the edothermic phase below the triple point
