Laboratory 3 Flashcards
Four major types of molecules
- Carbohydrates
- Proteins
- Lipids
- Nuclei acids
Is a solution of potassium iodide and iodine in water
Lugol’s Iodine
It is a test that is used to detect starch in a given example
Iodine test
It Is the absent of starch
Negative
It is the present of starch
Positive
Is a test used to check for the presence of reducing sugars in the given sample
Benedict’s test
Is is a test used to detect the present of protein in chemical test
Biuret test
It a test used to determine the Amount and present of cholesterol in chemical tests
Lipid test
4 major classification of carbohydrates
- Monosaccharides
- Disaccharides
- Oligosaccharides
- Polysaccharides
It is a simple sugars
Monosaccharides
Two monosaccharides undergo a dehydration synthesis
Disaccharides
Carbohydrates that contain 3 to 10 single sugar residues
Oligosaccharides
A long chains of monosaccharides linked by glycosidic bonds
Polysaccharides
Composed of amino acid residue linked by peptide bonds
Proteins
Non polar nature and hydrophobic = insoluble in water
Lipids
