AOC
French term for a PDO wine. Appellation d’Origine Controlee.
PDO
Protected Designation of Origin. Restrictive EU term to guarantee uniqueness. Implies laws in regards to varietals and methods used.
IGP
Indication Géographique Protégée. French term for a PGI wine.
PGI
Protected Geographical Indication. EU category which is less restrictive than PDO. It only guarantees where that the grapes came from that area.
Vin de Pays (VdP)
Another French term for a PGI wine.

Beaujolais: Nouveau
A light style of Beaujolais released in the November following the harvest.

The wine has been bottled from a vessel containing the dead yeast left over from fermentation. Gives more body and complexity. Common in the Nantais (Loire - Melon Blanc)
Alsace: Grand Cru
A wine from a superior vineyard site.
DOCG
Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita. Italian PDO wine, most restrictive Italian designation.
DOC
Denominazione di Origine Controllata. Italian PDO wine.
IGT
Indicazione Geografica Tipica. Italian PGI wine.

Classico
Italian. Indicates the historic center of many DOC and DOCG regions. Usually the best sites producing the best wines.
Riserva
Italian. Indicates that a DOC/DOCG wine has achieved a higher minimum level of alcohol and has been aged for at least a minimum number of months.
Amarone
A full bodied, complex, dry wine made from grapes that have been partially dried to concentrate the flavors. High alcohol content.
DOCa
Denominación de Origen Calificada. Spanish PDO wine. Highest quality category.
DO
Denominación de Origen. Spanish PDO wine.
Vino de la Tierra
Spanish PGI wine.

Spanish for red wine.
rosado
Spanish for rosé wine.

Joven
Spain. Indicates a wine that hasn’t been aged in oak.
Crianza
Spain. Minimum of 1 year in oak, a few months in bottle.
Reserva
Spain. A quality vintage, aged at least 3 years, one of which is in oak.
Gran Reserva
Spain. Exceptional vintage, aged at least 2 years in oak & 3 years in bottle.
Fume Blanc
Name for Sauvignon Blanc in California by some. May be unoaked to heavily oaked.
cuvee
A blend, which could be of different varieties, regions, or vintages, or it could be of different barrels or vats from the same estate of vineyard.
Barrique
Oak cask of 225L, traditional to Bordeaux.
Organic wine
Wine made from grapes without the use of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, or herbicides.
vieilles vignes
Old vines. Not legally defined. Signifies lower yield and higher quality from older vines.
Alcohol Content
Measured as a percentage of the total volume at 20C.
