Labelling & Teacher Racism - Gillborn & Youdell (2000) Flashcards
1
Q
what did G&Y find in their study?
A
- teachers were more likely to have negative expectations of black pupils
- racialised stereotyping
- expected them to present more discipline problems, so were quicker to discipline them —> led to confrontation —> black students getting into more trouble
2
Q
what did the black students think the teachers were doing? what do G&Y think of this?
A
- claimed teachers ‘picked’ on them
- G&Y believe that teachers were far less tolerant of black pupils which could explain why black pupils have the highest exclusion rate
3
Q
Eval for G&Y research (1)
A
- fails to acknowledge less tolerance in society for discrimination and better teacher-training may mean the problems are no longer as prevalent as they once were in 2000
4
Q
Eval regarding why exclusion rate for Black-Caribbean boys is significantly higher than for Black-African boys (2)
A
- unclear why teachers have racialised expectations of black boys but not other ethnic minority groups
- unclear why teachers would differentiate between black pupils in this way (referring to exclusion rates)
