Lab1 Flashcards
Dorsal/ventral
region of embryo encompassing the back(dorsal) to the belly(ventral)
Transverse sections
A thin slice made by cutting through the dorsal-ventral and left-right axes of the embryo.
Sagittal sections
A thin slice cut lengthwise through the dorsal-ventral and long( anterior/posterior) axes of the embryo.
Spermatogenesis
production of male reproductive cells(spermatozoa) in the testis.
Oogenesis
production of the female reproductive cells(ova) in the ovary.
Karyokinesis
Mitotic division of the nucleus.
Cytokinesis
Division of the cytoplasm to form 2 daughter cells at the completion of mitosis or telophase of meiosis.
Germinal vesicle
Nucleus of the primary oocyte. It is very large and has a germinal spot(nucleolus).
Mesolecithal
Refers to a moderate amount of yolk located at the vegetal hemisphere of the oocyte.
Telolecithal
Refers to a large amount of dense yolk located throughout the oocyte except for a small area at the animal pole.
Isolecithal
(iso=equal, lecithal=yolk) Refers to small amount of yolk that is evenly distributed in the oocyte.
Animal pole
Region of oocyte that contains the nuclear chromosomes and usually a small amount of yolk.
Animal hemisphere
The region of an oocyte that contains the animal pole and material above an imaginary line across the oocyte’s equator.
Vegetal pole
Yolk-rich region of oocyte that lies opposite the animal pole.
Vegetal hemisphere
The region of an oocyte that contains the vegetal pole and material below an imaginary line across the oocyte’s equator.
