Wound care
Protect wound from injury, prevent introduction and spread of bacteria,
reduce discomfort, and speed healing.
Dry Dressings
Ideal dressing is:
Easy to apply.
Conforms to body contours, Durable but flexible,
Able to absorb or contain exudate,
Easily removed without damage to the healing surface, and
Acceptable in appearance
Oldest and most common type
Do not interact with wound tissues and cause little wound irritation
Dry woven gauze dressings
Types of Wound Drainage
Serous
Purulent
Sanguineous
Serosanguineous
Clear, watery plasma
Serous
Thick, yellow, green, tan, or brown
Purulent
Bright red: Indicates active bleeding
Sanguineous
Pale, red, watery:
mixture of serous and sanguineous
Serosanguineous
Non-infectious dry waste
Black
Non-infectious wet waste (kitchen, dietary etc.)
Green
Infectious and Pathological waste
Yellow
Chemical waste including those w/ heavy metals
Yellow with black band
Radioactive waste

Sharps and pressurized containers
Red
Purposes of Dressings
- Promote hemostasis by direct pressure and absorption of drainage.
- Support or immobilize a body part.
Assessment
- Assess size and location of wound to be dressed. Assists in planning for proper type and amount of supplies needed.
- Ask client to rate pain using a scale of 0 to 10. Client may require pain medication before dressing change.
