Lab Skills Flashcards
In an investigation for determining the effect of temperature on the rate of reaction, why is it important to control the mass of the substances?
Because mass is a controlled variable in this experiment, which is a factor other than temperature that can affect the rate of reaction.
What is independent variable?
a variable that stands alone and isn’t changed by the other variables you are trying to measure
ex: it was the surface area of calcium carbonate.
what is dependent variable?
The dependent variable is the effect. Its value depends on changes in the independent variable.
ex: time taken for the calcium carbonate to react with hydrochloric acid.
what is control variable?
a variable or an element that is held constant throughout an experiment or research in order to assess the relationship between multiple variables.
ex:
Amount of Hydrochloric acid (25ml each trial)
The concentration of Hydrochloric acid
The water inside the Measuring Cylinder (100ml each trial)
what is the use of a graph in the lab report?
The graph can demonstrate the relationship or lack of relationship between variables and quantities.
what are the different types of graphs?
Bar Graph. Segmented Bar Graph. Column Graph. Box and Whiskers Graph (also called a Box Plot) Frequency Graph (Frequency Table) Cumulative Frequency Table. Frequency Polygon. Histogram.
but usually bar, line, and scatter plots are also used in lab reports
