What’s the main use for Whole Blood?
For volume resuscitation, red cells, incidents of major blood loss such as trauma or surgery
What’s the main use for Packed RBCs
It increases oxygen carrying capactiy in people who do not require/need extra volume, including patients with renal failure or history of unstable CHF
What’s the main use for Fresh Frozen plasm?
To replete clotting factors in people with clotting deficiencies such as liver disease, or DIC (Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation)
What’s the main use for Platelets?
To treat pt with thrombocytopenia with levels below 20,000 and evidence of active bleeding
What’s the main use for Albumin
increase circulating blood volume when administered as a hypertonic solution (5%). Increases the oncotic pressure in the intravascular space (25%)
Why is normal saline the recommended solution to be used when hanging blood products?
To prevent hemolysis of RBCs
What are 2 reasons for insertion of a peripheral IV catheter?
- Provide access to administer fluids
- Access to adminster medications
- Access to admin blood and blood products
What are signs of hypoglycemia?
- Irritability
- Agitation
- confusion to loss of consciousness
- tachycardia
- Dizziness
- Nausea
- Diaphoresis
- Coma and seizures
What is the treatment for hypoglycemia?
Glucose administration: 25 to 50 grams such as orange juice and crackers, administration of intravenous glucose (generally 50%), glucagon.
List signs associated with hyperglycemia.
- Lethargy,
- sleepiness to loss of consciousness,
- Kussmaul’s respirations,
- dehydration
What’s the treatment of hyperglycemia?
Intravenous normal saline (NS) and regular insulin IV continuous or SQ depending on patient condition and glucose level
