- No horseplay and be aware of others in the lab.
- No student should be unsupervised in the lab.
- Be prepared for your lab by reading your procedure for any safety precautions.
- Don’t eat, drink or chew gum in the lab (food may pick up harmful chemicals).
- Don’t sit on the lab benches where hazardous materials may have been used.
- Students must stand while doing labs.
- No unauthorized experiments.

- Fire extinguishers
- Eye wash station
- First aid kit
- Fire exits

Wear safety goggles for ALL EXPERIMENTS
- DON’T wear CONTACT LENSES (chemical can get in and damage your pupil/eye)
- Use prescription glasses with goggles instead - Dress Appropriately during a lab activity
- Long hair tied back
- Dangling jewellery & baggy clothing must be secured
- NO SANDALS on lab days

What are the rules for handling glassware?
- Don’t use cracked/chipped glassware.
- Broken glass should be reported to the teacher (there’s a designated glass disposal container).
- Don’t tightly stopper a flask where gas is being created (it could explode).
- Clean & return all glassware at the end of lab.

What are the rules for heating substances?
- Handle recently heated glassware with tongs.
- When heating a test tube, always point it away from youself & others. NEVER look into a container that’s being heated.
What do you do where there is an accident or you have an injury no matter how minor?
Report all accidents & injuries to the teacher.
What do you do when a chemical spills on your skin?
Rinse well with running water for as long as directed by your teacher.
What do you do when a chemical splashes into your eyes?
Rinse your eye immediately at the eye wash station for at 30 minutes & HOLD EYELIDS OPEN.
What do you do when a chemical is spilled?
Inform the teacher immediately and follow directions for safe clean up.
What do you do when a fire starts and you are on fire?
Inform a staff member immediately and STOP, DROP & ROLL!!!
What do you do when the lab is done?
- Clean all glassware & materials and put everything away according to instructions.
- Wipe the lab benches clean with paper towels.
- Return safety goggles to designated storage.
- Wash your hands with soap and water.
