Lab Questions Flashcards
What happens to a rock with directed pressure?
Without directed pressure?
Will have foliation (Burial Metamorphism)
No foliation (Contact Metamorphism)
Two general categories of metamorphism?
Regional Metamorphism
Contact Metamorphism
What is Regional Metamorphism
Rocks are affected over a wide range, they are typically foliated with slates around the outside to gneisses toward the inside
What is Contact Metamorphism?
Rock come into contact with liquid magma without being squeezed and are non foliated
Typically found in narrow bands surrounding igneous intrusions
What is the most common type of vertical burrow?
Skolithos
What is a diplocraterion?
U shaped burrow
What is a ophiomorphia?
Same as Skolithos but with fecal pellets and mucus
What are the 4 feeding strategies?
Suspension feeding
Deposit Feeding
Grazing
Predation
What is suspension feeding?
Feeding by filtering suspended food particles directly from sea water
What is deposit feeding?
Feeding by ingesting seafloor sediment and extracting its organic matter
What is grazing?
Scrapping or nibbling on algae from rock structures or plants
What is predation?
Feeding on other animals
What are the 5 behavioral roles?
Encruster
Burrower
Mobile Bottom Dweller
Stationary Bottom Dweller
Swimmer
What is an encruster?
Lives attached to hard objects like rocks with bioadhesives (Biological glue)
What is a burrower?
Lives below the seafloor in burrows
