Lab prep and safety Flashcards
What is a hazard?
The ability of a substance/biological agent to cause harm.
Out of your control.
What is a risk?
Likelihood of a substance/biological agent to be harmful under specific circumstances.
Can be controlled/limited.
COSHH
Control Of Substances Hazardous to Health
What is an intrinsic hazard?
Physical/Chemical/Biological e.g. microbes
Microbiological
Inhalation
What is an extrinsic risk?
How something is used e.g. procedures
Chemical
Ingestion

How can you minimise general risks in the laboratory?
Clear instructions
Risk assessments/COSHH
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Fire alarm/blanket/extinguisher
Technicians and first-aiders present
Emergency showers
Where do used hand towels go?
Green/grey bins
Where does ‘safe’ general waste go?
Green bins
Where does equipment with bacteria/that requires autoclaving go?
Red bins
Where does Genetically Modified (GM) waste go?
Red bins
Where do biohazards (infectious materials such as blood) and chemical waste go?
Yellow bins
Where does broken glass go?
Blue/grey bins or black dustbins
When should safety spectacles/visors be worn?
Handling acids/alkalis/corrosive or hazardous materials.
In solution chemistry laboratories.
Why are disposable gloves changed frequently?
To avoid contamination.
Gloves removed to handle other equipment, doorknobs and books.
