THR- Posterior Approach: precautions
- no hip flexion past 90°
- no hip internal rotation
- no hip adduction (abduction pillow)
THR- Anterior Approach: precautions
- no hip extension past neutral (be careful during ambulation)
- no hip ER (particularly in combination with extension)
- no hip flexion past 90°
- no bridging or prone position
Independent transfer
patient can perform transfer without any verbal or manual assistance (note: in some cases certain assistive devices may be used)
Modified Independent transfer
patient uses adaptive or assistive equipment to perform task independently (e.g. a tranfer board, bed rail, grab bars or furniture)
Assisted transfer
pt requires assistance from another person to perform activity safely in an acceptable time frame; physical assistance, oral or tactile cues, directions or instructions may be used
Standby (supervision) assistance transfer
Pt. requires verbal or tactile cues, directions, or instructions from another person positioned close to, but not touching, the person to perform the activity safely and in acceptable time frame; the assistant may provide protection in case the pt’s safety is threatened
Contact guarding transfer
caregiver is positioned close to the patient with his/her hands on the pt. or safety belt; it is very likely that the patient will require protection during the performance of the activity
Minimal assistance transfer
Pt. performs 75% or more of the activity, assistance is required to complete the activity
Moderate assistance transfer
pt. performs 50-74% of the activity, assistance is required to complete to activity
Maximal assistance transfer
pt. performs 25%-49% or more of the activity, assistance is required to complete the activity.
Dependent transfer
pt. requires total physical assistance from one or more persons to accomplish the activity safely; special equipment or devices may be used
Full Weight Bearing (FWB)
100%; no restrictions. Assistive device (AD) may be used for balance impairment
Weight Bearing as Tolerated (WBAT)
Limited only by the pt’s tolerance, usually 50-100%
Partial Weight Bearing (PWB)
prescribed amount as a percentage of the patient’s body weight, usually 20%-50%, although interpretations vary widely
Toe-touch weight bearing (TTWB)
foot may rest on the floor, but the extremity is not
