Lab MIDTERM Flashcards
Identify the differences between a
hypothesis and a prediction
A hypothesis is an idea about how something works that can be tested using experiments. A prediction says what will happen in an experiment if the hypothesis is correct.
anecdotal versus scientific information
Anecdotal - based on your own knowledge
Scientific - can be proven
What is a independent variable?
Independent variables are what we expect will influence dependent variables.
What is a Dependent variable?
A dependent variable is what happens as a result of the independent variable.
What is a Controlled variable?
A control/constant variable is the variable that is constant and unchanged throughout the course of the investigation.
What is a sample?
a small part or quantity intended to show what the whole is like.
What is a replicate?
repeat their experiment numerous times using exactly the same conditions to see if the results are consistent.
What are replications or sample size?
The number of replicates within each treatment group or sample is known as the sample size or n.
EX: In the bleaching experiment image above, the sample size is 5 for all groups.
Microscope (Eyepiece or ocular lens)
a cylinder containing two or more lenses to bring the image to focus for the eye.
Microscope (Objective lens)
a cylinder containing one or more lenses, typically made of glass, to collect light from the sample.
Microscope (the stage)
a platform below the objective which supports the specimen being viewed.
Microscope (the illumination source)
Below the stage, light is provided and controlled in a variety of ways.
Microscope (course focus adjustment knob)
moves the stage vertically very quickly
Microscope (Fine focus adjustment knob)
is used to slowly move the stage vertically
Microscope (iris diaphragm and condenser)
used to control the amount and focus of the light onto the lenses
