lab investigation of fbc Flashcards
what is haematopoeisis
blood cell production, normally occurring in the bone marrow
what is FBC
full blood count
Hb
Concentration of Hb
Ht
Percentage of blood volume that is RBC
MCV (mean cell volume)
Average size of the RBC
MCH
Average Hb content of the RBC
RDW
Range of deviation around the RBC size
Reticulocyte count
Reticulocytes are immature red blood cells (RBCs)
what other results are taken from FBC?
- Total WBC
- Neutrophils
- Lymphocytes
- Monocytes
- Basophils
- Eosinophils
- Platelet count & size
what can blood films show for RBCs?
- size
- colour: Hb content
- Shape
- Polychromasia- reticulocyte count
what can blood films show for WBCs?
- numbers (too few or too many)
- normal morphology
- immature cells
- abnormal cells
transfusion requests
have to be handwritten by law, minimum of 1600 a day
how is white cell distribution measured by size and staining?
the plot is based on light refraction & size
peroxidase is stained for (in neutrophils)
- machine turns data into numbers
blood film for patient with iron deficiency anaemia
- some cells with little Hb: area of central pallor is low
- some elliptocytes
blood film for patient with macrocytic anaemia
- some cells oval shaped
- lots of little fragments
- some RBCs very large & same shape as lymphocytes
