Lab Final Flashcards
What are the four major classes of macromolecules?
proteins, carbohydrates, lipids and nucleic acids
What test is for proteins?
Biuret
What test is for carbohydates( simple sugars)
Benedicts test
What test is for starches?
Lugols
What test is for lipids?
Sudan IV staining
Benedicts test works best if the sugars are?
in linear form
Biuret(Proteins) color changes?
not present=light blue
present=violet
Benedects(Carbohydrates/reducing sugar/gluclose/fructose) color changes?
not present=blue
present=red
Lugols(starches) color changes?
not present=yellow
present=dark blue/black
Sudan IV(lipids) color changes?
not present=red
present=red orange
Dffusion
the movement of molecules from a region where the molecules are in a relatively higher concertration to a region where they are in lower concentration. This movement continues until equilibrium is reached.
Osmosis
the diffusion of water the movement of a solvent down its own concentration gradient through a semi-permeable barrier.
Sodium Azide
poison that binds to cytochrome oxidase, an enzyme that parts of the electron transport chain and blocks the electron transport chain.
Sodium Flouride
inhibits enolase which is need for glycoysis, thus stops at glycolysis and fermentation does not happen and pyruvate is not made.
pGlO
the name of the plasmid we isolated in week 7
