[LAB] Experiment 1: Kinematics Flashcards
Book Basis
When an falling object is not affected by any restraints like friction and air resistance, and falls under the influence of gravity alone, the object is said to be in ____________.
Free fall Motion
(object that is moving only because of the action of gravity)
The equation of motion for freely falling bodies are also same with ________________
uniformly accelerated motion.
Instead of using a (acceleration), acceleration due to gravity (g) is used and is set ______
constant.
Acceleration due to gravity formula
-9.8m/s^2
A form of motion experienced by an object or particle that is thrown near the earth’s surface and moves along a curved path under the action of gravity only (in particular, the effects of air resistance are assumed to be negligible).
Projectile Motion
The objects maximum height is the _____
highest vertical position along trajectory (path)
The horizontal displacement of the projectile is called the
Range of the projectile
The range of the projectile depends on the object’s initial _____________
Velocity
Can be used to calculate where the ball will land when it is shot at an angle above the horizontal
Initial Speed
The maximum height of the projectile is given by the formula:
H = (Vosin0)^2 /2g
Horizontal range is computed using
R = Vosin0t’
t’ means
Time of flight
defined as the time from when the object is projected to the time it reaches the surfaces.
The time of flight projectile motion
This is twice the time to reach the maximum height
Symmetrical Projectile
The time to reach the maximum height is same with the time going down from maximum height to the ground. This is given by the formula:
t’ = 2Vosin0 / g
Materials used for Free Fall Motion
- 1 Xplorer GLX
- 1 Photogate Head & Cable
- 1 Picket Fence
- 1 Digital Adapter
- Computer For Simulation
- 1 Multi-clamp
- 1 A-Base
- 1 Metal Rod
- 1 Soft Pad
STEP 1
Prepare the apparatus
STEP 2
Prepare to drop the Picket Fence through Photogate Head vertically, without tilting it. When releasing the Picket Fence, hold its top edge between your thumb and forefinger. Make sure to place a soft pad so it can cushion the fall of the Picket Fence.
STEP 3
Click on the Play Button of the Xplorer GLX to begin the recording the data for velocity and position. Drop the Picket Fence
STEP 4
When the Picket Fenced passed through the Photogate Head completely, clik the Play Button of the Xplorer GLX to stop the recording.
STEP 5
Record your data and repeat step 2-4. Make five trials.
STEP 6
Calculate for the experimental value of acceleration due to gravity using the equation.
STEP 7
Caluclate for the percentage error.
