Lab Exercise 7 Flashcards
What happens in cytokinesis in animal cells?
Animal cells begin with the formation of a cleavage furrow in th equatorial region. The indentation in the membrane deepens as a ring of microfilaments surrounding the equatorial plate contracts, resulting in the formation of two new cells.
What happens in cytokinesis in plant cells?
Formation of cell plate separates cell, resulting in two new cells.
What is the significance of mitosis to the organism?
Required for growth and repair for multicellular organisms and reproduction for single celled organisms.
What organelle involved in cell division is present in animal, but not plant cells?
Centrioles.
What is the significance of meiosis?
Responsible for reproduction and gene diversity which is an important evolutionary advantage.
What process produces gametes in animals?
Meiosis.
What is the difference between spermatogenesis and oogenesis?
Spermatogenesis produces 4 gametes, whereas oogenesis produces 1 gamete and 3 polar bodies that disintegrate.
What process in plants produces haploid spores?
Sporogenesis.
What process produces spores(n)?
Plant meiosis called sporogenesis.
What process produces gametes in plant cells?
When spores grow into a haploid plant, it makes gametes by mitosis.
What is the diploid, spore producing plant called?
Sporophyte.
What is the haploid gamete-producing plant called?
Gametophyte.
Where does meiosis occur in plants?
On the underside of leaves, called sporangia.
What are sporangia organized into?
Organized into clusters, called sori.
What is the structure that produces eggs in gametophytes?
Archegonia.
