Colony- visible pile of cells that has growth from one cell
Morphology- the study of the appearance of an organism
Terms to describe FORM
Shape of colony
punctiform , circular, irregular, filamentous(fuzzy), rhizoid (distinct colony)
Terms to describe MARGIN
Edge of colony
Entire, Undulate, Lobate(flower), Serrate, Filamentous, Curled (ripples)
Terms to describe ELEVATION
Height of colony
Flat, raised, convex, pulvinate(mountain), umbonate (center different like belly button: inny or outy)
Terms to describe SURFACE STRUCTURE (2 terms)
Shiny, glistening, dull, dry, powdery
Smooth, wrinkled, rough
Terms to describe OPTICAL CHARACTER
Opaque (can’t see through)
Translucent (opalescent- reflect color/ iridescent- metallic look/ fluorescent- glow in UV/ bioluminescent- glow in the dark
