Apomorphy
Derived trait that is unique to a group or species.
Autapomorphy
A derived trait that is unique to a given taxa. Not found in any other taxa.
Synapomorphy
Characteristic present in an ancestral species and shared exclusively by its evolutionary descendants.
Plesiomorphy
Ancestral trait that is homologous within a particular group of organisms but is not unique to the members of that group.
Homoplasty
Trait shared by set of species but is not present in their common ancestor. Also called convergence.
Homologous
Similar species related by common decent
Analogous
Species with similar structures but have different origins.
