Lab Equipment Flashcards
Erlenmeyer Flask
Holds liquids that DO react to gas or are likely to splatter.
Beaker
Holds liquids that DO NOT release gas when reacted or are unlikely to splatter or combust when stirred/heated.
Florence Flask
Not used much in first year chemistry. Used to mix chemicals. Narrow neck prevents splash.
Graduated Cylinder
Used to measure liquids. Mm
Gas Collecting Bottles
Used when lots of gas is produced. MUST be collected by the displacement of water.
Test Tubes (3)
Ignition Tube (largest), 13x100mm tubes (normal tubes), 10x75mm tubes (small tubes)
Test Tube Holder
Good for handling hot test tubes.
Test Tube Brushes
Used to clean grad cylinders and normal tubes. Don’t force into small tubes, could break them.
Test Tube Racks
Hold test tubes. Plastic holders can melt due to hot tubes.
Rubber Stoppers
Plugs containers that are contaminated. Don’t heat containers with stoppers in them.
Spot Plates
Used for watching many small scale reactions at a time.
Watch Glass
Used to hold a small amount of a solid, like a product of a reaction.
Glass Rod
Used to stir solution and drop liquids.
Medicine dropper
Used for moving tiny volumes liquid. (Less than a mL) rubber bulb at the top
Litmus Paper. Red then Blue
Used for ph testing. Red is for bases, Blue is for acids
Forceps (tweezers)
Used to pick up small things.
Funnel
Helps move liquid.
Mohr Pipet
Measures/Delivers exact volumes of liquid.
Wash Bottle
Squirts water, should only be distilled water.
Weighing boat
Weighs solids that will be moved to different places.
Spatulas
Removes chemicals from containers. DO NOT use your hands.
Scoopula
Used to physically remove chemicals from their containers.
Beaker Tongs
Moves Beakers that are hot.
Bunsen Burner
Used to heat liquids/solids.
