Lab Equipment Flashcards
Beaker
Holds solids and liquids that will not release gasses when reacted or are unlikely to splash when stirred or heated
Erlenmeyer Flask
holds solids and liquids that may release gases during a reaction or are likely to splatter if stirred
Florence Flask
Rarely used in the first year of chem
used for mixing chemicals
Graduated Cylinder
Used to measure volumes of liquid
Gas Collecting Bottle
used when large volumes of gases are produced and must be collected by the displacement of water
Test tube holder
used to pick up test tubes when to hot to handle
Test Tube racks
used to hold and organize test tubes on the lab counter
plastic ones may melt if test tubes too hot
Rubber Stoppers
used to close containers to avoid spillage or contamination
( container should never be heated when using these)
Spot Plates
used when we want to perform many small scale reactions at one time
Watch Glass
used to hold small amounts of liquid, such as product of a reaction
Glass Stir rod
used to manually stir solutions
also used to transfer a single drop of solution
Medicine Dropper
used to transfer a small volume of liquid
Litmus Paper
Red: used to identify bases
Blue: used to identify acid
Forceps
Used to pick up small items
Funnel
used to aid in the transfer a liquid from one vessel to another
Mohr Pipet
measures and delivers exact volumes of liquids
Wash Bottle
used to deliver a solution to a specific area
Distilled water is the only liquid that can be used in a wash bottle
Weighing Boat
used to weigh solids that will be transferred to another vessel
Spatulas
used to dispense solid chemicals from their containers
(never transfer by hand )
Beaker Tongs
used to move beakers containing hot liquid
Bunsen Burner
used for the heating of nonvolatile liquids and solids
Evaporating Dish
used for the heating of stable solid compounds and elements
Crucible
used for heating certian solids particularly metals to very high temp
Clay triangle
used as a support for porcelein crucibles when being heated over a bunsen burner
Crucible Tongs
for handling hot crucibles
Glass Plates
Provides a surface scale experiments such as drop reactions and testing of acids and bases
Triangular File
used primarily to cut glass rod
Ringstands and components
safe and convenient way t perform reactions that require heating using a bunsen burner
Iron rings ( component )
connect to a ringstand and provide a stable elevated platform for their reaction
Utility ( component )
used to secure test tube, distillation columns and burets to the ringstand
Double Buret Clamps ( component )
used to buret long graduated tubes used in titration
Wire Gauze ( component )
Sits on iron ring to provide place to stand a beaker
Pressed Fiber
4 by 4 square of ceramic fiber it provides a surface for hot beakers that shouldn’t come in contact with cold counter tops
striker
used to light bunsen burners
