Lab Apparatus Flashcards
Glassware with rounded bottom designed to contain small number of samples for reactions
Test tube
Used to clean narrow mouth laboratory glassware
Test tube brush
Used to hold multiple test tubes in an upright position
Test tube rack
Primarily used to hold small quantities of substances which will undergo direct heating (same as test tube but thicker)
Hard glass tube or ignition tube
Used as small heating source
Alcohol lamp
Clamp with a spring handle used to hold test tube (hot)
Test tube holder
Used to guide the transfer of liquids into a container with narrow opening
Stirring or glass rod
Used to transfer solid materials/chemicals from its original container onto a weighing box and other containers
Porcelain and stainless spatula
Used to draw liquid that can then be squeezed out in small drops. Be careful when using it because it can introduce air bubbles and disturb your solution.
Dropper pipet
For adding chemical solution to a reaction vessel to minimize the risk of a reaction occurring too quickly and bubbling over
Thistle tube
Used to measure an exact volume of liquid and placing it into another container. The digits indicates the exact volume measured by the single graduated marks.
Volumetric pipet
Serves as a vacuum source to draw liquids
Aspirator
Used to transfer milliliter volumes of liquid, from less than 1 mL to up to 50 mL
Serological pipet
Used for titrating alkaline solutions only because acids can react with the rubber tubing
MOHR BURET OR BASE BURET
Used for titrating acids solutions only because alkalies/bases have the property to attack the glass stopcock
GEISSLER BURET OR ACID BURET
Squeezable plastic bottle with nozzle used to dispense distilled water for rinsing
WASH BOTTLE
Used to prepare solutions to an accurate volume
VOLUMETRIC FLASK
Primary measuring tool for liquids
Graduated cylinder
Used to hold liquids and for mixing, stirring, and heating chemicals
Beaker
For uniform heating, boiling, distillation and ease of swirling
Florence flask
“Conical Flask”
Used to contain and mix chemicals, the small neck is to facilitate mixing without spilling
Erlenmeyer flask
Used for the determination of iodine, has a ground socket and cup shaped top
Iodine flask
A small- handled, deep porcelain crucible used for heating and evaporating
Porcelain casserole
Used to hold hot objects
Crucible tong
Flat surfaced device used for controlled and consistent heating
Hot plate
a small bowl with a spout used to evaporate excess solvents in a small sample
Evaporating dish
Device used to determine temperature
Thermometer
Equipment used to condense
Condenser
Guides the flow of the distillate to the receiving vessel
Glass adapter
Used to separate mixtures of two liquids with different boiling points
Distilling flask
Metal ring with screw clamp to support containers
Iron ring
An upright metal rod attached to a heavy metal base used to provide stability and support
Iron stand
Metal equipment used to hold and secure a buret on a stand
Buret clamp
Metal equipment used to secure laboratory clamps
Clamp holder
Used to hold and secure glassware
Other types of clamps
Funnel with perforated plate and a vacuum in the flask underneath the filter
Büchner funnel
“Büchner flask, vacuum flask, suction flask, side-arm flask or Kitasato flask”
Thick-walled Erlenmeyer flask with a short glass tube and hose barb protruding from its neck
Filtering flask
Used to transfer liquids or fine-grained materials into containers with small openings
Glass funnel
Triangular wire frame with clay covering used to support crucible when heated over an open flame
Clay triangle
Used for holding chemicals during heating to very high temperatures
Porcelain crucible
Three-legged metal frame used as a platform
Tripod
Used to adjust the shape of the flame
Wing top
Used as passage lines for fluids and gases
Rubber tubing
Metal clamp used on a flexible tube to regulate the flow of a fluid through the tube
Pinchcock
Metal heating device connected to a flammable gas source
Bunsen burner
Wire screen with ceramic fibered center used to spread the heat of the flame
Wire gauze
Shallow cylindrical glass or plastic flat bottomed dish with lid used primarily to culture microorganisms and cells
Petri dish
Used to cover a beaker or to hold small amount of solid or liquid while they are being weighed
Watch glass
Ceramic or plastic reaction surface containing small wells for spot tests
Spot plate
Glass funnel with a tap at the bottom used for parting immiscible liquid components in a mixture
Separatory funnel
Sealable glass enclosure used for storage or preservation of moisture-sensitive items
Desiccator
a vessel in which substances are ground or crushed
Mortar
a tool used to crush, mash or grind materials in
Pestle
Metal tool for scoring and trimming glass rods
Triangular file
Metal tool used for cutting a hole in a cork or rubber stopper
Cork borer
Electric device used to measure hydrogen-ion activity of a solution
pH meter
Accurate and precise instrument used to measure weight in quantitative chemical analysis
Analytical balance
