What are the Heating and Fire Safety Rules?

A

1) Maintain a clean work area and keep materials away from flames
2) Never reach across an open flame
3) know how to use the Bunsen burner properly, don’t leave heat source unattended
4) when heating test tube, always paint it away from you and others. Position yourself nearest to the wall and point the test tube towards the wall.
5) never heat a liquid in a sealed container.
6) Before picking up a container that has been heated, hold the back of your hand to the container to test how hot it is. Use clamp or tongs if too hot.
7) Never Run when you are on fire or if there is a fire. Smother it with fire blanket and role on ground.

What are the “Working in the lab safely regulations”

A

1) pay attention to any safety notes and or changes to the procedure that the teacher made.
2) always use heat resistant glassware for heating (Pyrex)
3) Use materials only from properly labeled containers. Read the labels carefully before using
4) Don’t return chemicals in stock containers. Discard extra chemicals as your teacher directs.
5) always add acid to water to dilute acids
6) don’t use sink to discard matches, broken glass, or any other solid material
7) Store backpacks, coats, and other personal items away from the immediate lab bench area and not in the aisles. Under and on desk
8) don’t use safety equipment unnecessarily
9) always label glassware with the names of the substance before adding the substance. Include date and name.

A

1) clean up work area, throw trash away, return equipment
2) turn off all water and burners and gas nobs
3) dispose of chemicals and other materials directed by teacher
4) place lab coat on hanger and hang it
5) wash hands.
