lab Flashcards
3 types of glands in the body
endocrine exocrine and mixed glands
Endocrine?
secrete hormones and consist of glandular epithelium coiled around capillaries. products of the glands empty into capillaries and are carried to various target organs. EX. THYROID GLAND
Exocrine?
secrete products to a surface duct and include glands such as salivary glands
Mixed glands?
are both endocrine and exocrine in nature. EX:Pancreas.–> functions as an exocrine gland and releases digestive juice into small intestine. –> functions as an endocrine gland by secreting insulin and glucagon produced in islets of langerhan’s.
Pituitary gland
consist of adeno and neuro regions. rests in the sella turcica.
adeno region
consist of glandular epithelium and secretes hormones
neuro region
serves as a storage area for hormones produced by the hypothalamus
adenohypophysis secretes:
GH;Prolactin;MSH;Gonadotropins; Adrenocorticotropic; thyrotropic
GH
regulates overall growth
Prolactin
initiates and maintains milk secretion
MHS
aids in increasing skin pigmentation
Gonadotropins
help regulate gamete formation ( follicle stimulation hormone and luteinizing hormone)
adrenocorticotropics
controls the activity of the adrenal cortex
thyrotropic hormone
controls thyroid activity
Neurohypophysis stores 2 hormones produced by the hypothalmus
Antidiuretic hormone and oxytocin
