ocular lens
lens throughout which the user views the slide
light source
a bulb in the base of the microscope
light intensity adjustment
adjusts the bulb intensity
condenser
concentrates the beam of light onto the specimen
iris diaphragm
adjusts the amount of light that passes through the condenser
stage
flat platform on which the slide is placed
mechanical stage
clips on the stage to hold the slide in place (adjusted with the mechanical stage knobs)
nose piece
a revolving mount that holds the objective lenses
objectives
provide magnification of the specimen
4x objective
scanning objective
10x objective
low-power objective
40x objective
high-power of high-dry objective
coarse adjustment knob
large diameter knob used to bring the specimen into focus (only used with 4x objective)
fine adjustment knob
the smaller the diameter knob used to made the small adjustments in focusing
