Lab 6 - Techniques in Ecology C - Invertebrates Flashcards
What are some important ecosystem functions of invertebrates?
- Dung burial
- Decomposition of plant material (nutrient recycling)
- Pest control
- Pollination
- Soil aeration and turning
- Wildlife nutrition (food source)
- Seed dispersal
How would you distinguish an arachnid from an insect?
Insects have six legs, whereas arachnids have eight. Most insects have antennae, but arachnids don’t.
Insects have 3 body segments (head, abdomen, thorax); arachnids only have 2 (abdomen,
cephalothorax).
Describe the main morphological and ecological (food preference, habitat) differences between
centipedes and millipedes?
Morphological: Millipedes have two sets of leg per segment under their body while centipedes have only one. Millipedes have a tube shaped body and small antennae while centipedes have long antennae and a flat body.
Ecological: Millipedes can be found in moist forest areas while centipedes prefer dry environments. Millipedes eat decomposing organic matter while centipedes eat insects and small animals.
What kinds of invertebrates do you expect to be caught with the pit-fall trap?
Mostly invertebrates that dwell in the ground such as some beetles, ants, spiders, and millipedes.
