lab 6 Flashcards
Prophase:
Since prophase is the start of mitosis, it usually takes the longest out of all the stages. The DNA coils around proteins into observable sister chromatids joined together at their centromeres. Remember that the DNA was copied into sister chromatids during the S phase. The nuclear envelope is also broken down and removed from around the DNA. Lastly, the centrioles separate and move to opposite ends of the cell, and form protein fibers called spindle fibers, which radiate out from the centrioles and attach to the centromeres of the sister chromatids. Once the spindles attach, the cell precedes into the metaphase stage.
Metaphase
recognized by a line of sister chromatids aligned along the center of the cell. Once the chromosomes are aligned in the center of the cell, the cell then enters anaphase.
Anaphase
where the centrioles and spindles physically pull the sister chromatids apart from one
another and towards the opposite ends of the cell.
Telophase
finishes the entire process of mitosis by reversing everything that occurred in prophase, creating a single cell with two separate nuclei and DNA.
how many steps in mitosis?
