Lab 6 Flashcards
differential stain
provides more than just size, shape, and arrangement, structural differences
- gram positive - high peptidoglycan low lipid
- gram negative - low peptidoglycan high lipid
how nutrients and temperature can directly influence bacterial growth? ***
cardinal temperature points
min, max and optimal growth temp.
Minimum, maximum and optimal growth temperature
min - lowest temp where growth occurs
max - highest temp where growth occurs
optimum - its where they are found growing (natural environment)
what does psychrophiles grow at?
micrbes that grow within a temp ranfe of less than 0 degrees C and 20 C
mesophiles
minimum - 15-30 C
max - above 45 C
optimal - 30-40 C
(our bodys are 37)
- main cause of infections
thermophiles
min - 45 C
max - exceed 100C
optimal - 50 -85 C
Thermophiles are archaea but are archaea classified as hyperthermophiles
Yes because it exceeds 80 degrees C
what is the difference of an enriched media, chemically defined media, EZ medium, complex
- enriched - contains growth factors, vitamins, and other essential nutrients to promote growth of fastidious organisms
- chemically defined - chemical composition of medium is known
- EZ - chemical components are exactly known
- Complex media - which contains extractions and digests of yeast, meat or plants and percise chemical composition not known.
