lab 5-quiz 3 Flashcards
why is it unnecessary for there to be a 1:1 ratio of lauric acid to hcl?
??
why was acetyl chloride/ethanol used as the source of hydrochloric acid instead of aqueous HCL?
Because acetyl chloride/ethanol create a dehydrated acid - HCl + ester (no water). if aqueous hcl was used, this would add water to soln.
why was sodium bicarbonate used during the isolation of the product?
The sodium bicarbonate is very effective in removing acids from solutions.
What impurities were removed during the column chromatography?
removes acidic impurity.
mechanisms
.
what are 2 factors that can help drive equilibrium to the product size?
- increase amount of ethanol
- make sure theres no water in the reaction
hcl is not a limiting reagent bc
it is a catalyst
organic phase
lauric acid and ethyl laurate
aqueous phase
hcl and h20
side reaction
