eukaryotic vs prokaryotic
prokaryotic: -lack membrane-bound organelles -DNA concentrated in region called nucleoid region eukaryotic: -membrane bound organelles
plasma membrane
selectively permeable, regulates cell conditions
types of exchange across membrane
1) simple diffusuon - movement without energy, with conc gradient
2) carrier-mediated transport: movement with us of specialized proteins
3) bulk transport: movement of verylarge substances with interaction of cell membrane and vesicles
osmosis
solvent diffuses from a dilute solution (high water) or more concentrated solution (low water)
osmotic pressure
amount of force it takes to oppose osmosis
tonicity
refers to concentration of solutes on one side of a membrane relative to the other side of the membrane
isotonic
solute concentration equal inside and outside cell
hypotonic
less solute outside than inside
hypertonic
more solutes in solution than in cells
hemolysis
red blood cell placed in hypotonic solution, cells swell and burst
plant cells in hypotonic solutions
experience maximum turgor pressure, doesn’t burst bc cell wall
creantion
blood cells in hyperotnic solutuion, cell shrinks
