LAB 4 Actinomycetes Flashcards
what are actinomycetes
they are common soil bacteria which have a similar lifecycle to that seen in fungi, these are also the source of many antibiotics
What does the life cycle of a actinomycetes look like
1) germination–> spores settle in nutrient rich medium and exit the dormant state and begin growth via binary fission
2) vegetative growth–> banching of germ tubes occurs forming a network of filaments which growth across the surface of the substrate this network is called mycelium
3) Aerial Growth–> in response to nutrient depletion mycelium begins to differentiate and the organism begins to grows upward forming aerial hyphae
4) aerial hyphae undergo cell division forming many monoploid compartments which develop into spores
What is antibiosis
when a bacteria is able to produce a antibotic which clears nearby bacteria (zone of clearing)
