Lab 3 Flashcards
Domain
Kingdoms with important similarities. There are three domains: archaea, bacteria, and eukarya
Supergroup
A new hierarchical taxon, groups above the kingdom level and below the domain level
Clade
A group of species that includes an ancestral species and all its descendants
Filaments
Long strings of cells
Heterocyst
Cells that are larger and appear to have thicker walls than the rest of the cells.
Nitrogen fixation
Can take atmospheric nitrogen and convert it directly into usable compounds
Heterotrophic
The organisms included in this kingdom lack chlorophyll (feed on other plants and animals to obtain chemical energy)
Hyphae
Long, slender tubes or filaments
Saprophytic
Fungi that is unable to make their own food (feed on dead or dying organisms and digest food externally)
Parasitic
Live in or on living organisms and drive nutrients from them
Conjugation
Transfer of DNA
Zygosporangium
A multinucleate zygote that has a thick, spiny wall
Asci
Members of the phylum ascomycetes produce haploid spores by meiosis in tiny sacs
Ascospores
Long, slender asci
Basidia
Tiny club - shaped structures
Basidiospores
Phylum basidiomycetes produces these spores externally, following sexual reproduction
Stalk
Supports the mushroom
Pileus or cap
Expanded top
Gills
Radiate outward from the center of the cap on its undersurface
Cytoplasmic streaming
Movement within the cell
Air bladders
Small, spherical, may be observed on the branches below the tips
Saprophyte
Zygote grows by mitosis into a green, leafy, diploid that is two cells thick
