Lab 2: Measuring Physical Activity Flashcards
Pedometers
Measures steps of walking or running -uses a metal pendulum that creates an electronic counting circuit that completes when a step is taken
Pedometer advantages
-Inexpensive
-Easy to use
-Fewer measurement errors
Pedometer disadvantages
-Not accurate for some activities like cycling or stairs
-Can’t provide intensity, frequency or duration
-Misreading may occur due to improper use
Accelerometers
Electronic sensors that detect and record acceleration from movement done during activities. Measures movement in 3 planes and converts movement to electrical signals using a sensor.
Advantages of accelerometers
-Reliable tool
-Easy to use
-Distinguish types of activities
-Measure the intensity of activities
Disadvantages of accelerometers
-Sensitive to temperature
-Not accurate for some activities like treadmill and elliptical
-Measure based on which body part is used
FitBit
Digital activity tracker worn like a watch designed to measure and promote physical activity
How fitbit measures distance traveled
Steps * Stride length = Distance traveled
Advantages of FitBit
-Provides real-time data
-Measures other things besides physical activity such as heart rate, sleep rhythm, and BP
Disadvantages of fitbit
-Expensive
-Inaccurate calories burned or heart rate
Metabolic Equivalents (MET) Charts
Used in order to measure the amount of energy needed for a specific task by using body’s oxygen consumption.
-Light intensity: <3
-Moderate intensity: 3-6
-Vigorous intensity: >6
MET Advantages
-Simple practical and easy use
-Can give an approximation of O2 being used compared to resting rate
-Can help understand what types of exercise will allow them to burn most calories
MET disadvantages
-METs are a standard and do not take height, weight, age, or fitness level
-Need extra calculation
