Lab 2: Intro to Ultrasound Flashcards
What is the purpose of the ultrasound gel
Reduce impedance between probe and skin
What does the numbers on the probes mean
Indicates the frequency emitted by the probe
Higher number: better resolution but less penetrating depth into the tissue: musculoskeletal scanning
Lower number means less resolution but more penetration: Wide field of view for abdominal scanning
What is the appearance of veins, arteries, muscle, bone and nerves on ultrasound
- Veins + Arteries are generally circles with dark (anechoic) in the middle. Artery is pulsing but vein is not.
- Muscle: lightish grey. Can see the muscle fibres depending on transverse or axial.
- Bone: white: hyperechoic
-Nerve has a white border but dark circles within it where the fibres are- bundle of grapes
What does doppler effect colour do
Shows flow towards or away from the probe- however better when looking in parallel to the vessels- not perpendicular
Red: coming toward probe head
Blue: coming away from probe head.
What is the maximum depth of structures you can see
The depth of the bone because underneath this the sound cannot penetrate
