Lab 2 Flashcards
Nucleus Function
Cells control center and holder of genetic information
Nuclear Pores Function
Allows small molecules and ions to freely pass, or diffuse, in and out of the cell
Plasma membrane function
Provides protection for the cell and provides a fixed environment inside of the cell
Ribosome function
Site of protein synthesis in the cell
Smooth ER Function
Synthesis of essential lipids such as phospholipids and cholesterol
Rough ER Function
Involved in the production, folding, quality control and dispatch of some proteins
Golgi Apparatus Function
A factory in which proteins received from the ER are further processed and sorted for transport to their eventual destination (post office)
Lysosome Function
Rid cell of waste products and scavenge metabolic building blocks that sustain essential bio synthetic reactions during starvation
Peroxisomes Function
Small vesicles that are membrane bound and contain digestive enzymes for breaking down toxic materials in the cell and oxidative enzymes for metabolic activity
Mitochondria Function
Synthesizes ATP due to increased surface area
Cytoskeleton Function
Made up of microtubules and filaments - helps cells maintain their shape and internal organization and provides mechanical support
Microtubules Function
Facilitate cell movement, cell division, and transportation of materials within the cells
Microfilaments Function
Generate the forces used in cellular division contraction and basic cell movements
Cilia Functiom
Move water relative to the cell in a regular movement of the cilia
Flagella Function
Enables movement and chemotaxis
