Lab 14: Rates of Chemical Reaction Flashcards
What is reaction rate?
A measurement of the change in concentration of a product or reactant with respect to time`
What are the units for reaction rate?
M/s: molarity/sec
What factors affect reaction rates?
Temperature, concentration, and catalyst
What is average rate?
The average rate of a reaction between two points in time
What is instantaneous rate?
The rate at a given point in time (derivative of the curve)
What is collision theory?
The rate of a reaction depends on the frequency of collisions that are energetic enough to result in the formation of the activated complex
What is the purpose of the KNO3 in the solution?
It keeps the reaction medium the same in each run in terms of the concentration of ions
What is the purpose of the drop of EDTA in the solution?
It is to minimize the effects of of trace quantities of metal ion impurities that would cause spurious effects on the reaction.
When does the color change occur?
When the 2.0 X10^-4 of S2O8^-2 (peroxydisulfate) has fully reacted/consumed
